New Squad Additions for Season 2009/10

As with every junior football side, players move on for one reason or another at the end of a season.

Despite regaining The North East Junior Super League Trophy last season we lost strikers Gordon Carstairs to Deveronvale, Richard Stainer to Banchory St Ternan, Myles Brownhill to Huntly and Richie Taylor who is emigrating to Australia.

We wish each and every one of them every success with their new club and thank them all for their huge contribution over the last four seasons in establishing Banks O Dee as the leading club in North East Junior Football.

All four players will pick up their second Super League Champions medal in consecutive years at The Highland Hotel this weekend and they can be rightfully proud of their achievements.

Obviously these players have to be replaced and we are pleased to announce several new signings whom we think will help us maintain our challenge for major honours in the coming season.

Here are Banks O Dee’s new signings for season 2009/10.

1. Martin Christie

An experienced defender who spent many years with Montrose Roselea. Now living in Aberdeen Martin has trained regularly with The Dee over the last few seasons and we are therefore well informed as to his capabilities.

He is a resolute defender who will give us vital options in the last third of the park, an area we were determined to strengthen before the start of the new season. Played against Montrose and Keith in last weekend’s Willie Allen Tournament at Keith, putting in two sound performances.

2. Colin McGuigan

Another experienced defender who has arrived in Aberdeen to Study Primary Teaching at Aberdeen University. Colin arrived from Sauchie Juniors and previously played for Hill of Beith, who are a major force in junior football in The Central Belt of Scotland.

He made his debut al left back against Montrose and his physical presence and organisational abilities will prove to be a huge asset in the coming season.

3. Richy Whyte

A striker signed just before last week’s Willie Allen Tournament at Keith. Richie has been a target or Banks O Dee for some time, the club having first enquired about him two years ago when playing for Ellon.

Richie moved to Stonehaven during last season but encountered an unhappy spell and when they were relegated, manager Gary Welsh swooped to sign him. A hard working striker who will unsettle defences as proved when he scored the opening goal for Stonehaven at Spain Park in March last season.

Richie has a good attitude, is willing to listen and learn as to the style of football played at Banks O Dee and we are sure he will be a big asset in the last third of the park.

4. Jack Strachan

A young striker signed on loan from Loco Works until the end of the season. Locos manager Dave Cormie who is a very close friend of Ian Taylor and Gary Welsh was delighted to send young Jack to finish his education at Spain Park and he has been an instant hit.

Strongly built, he is never static, especially in the box and attacks the ball both in the air and ground. As with Richie Whyte, it will take little time for this youngster to adapt to the Banks O Dee method of play but we are convinced we have a young striker of great ability and work ethic who will be a major force in junior soccer circles this season.

5.Scott Pirie

Young Scott was signed late last season after a string of impressive under 21 performances. The coaching staff at Spain Park are constantly on the lookout for wide players with pace and Scott certainly has the raw talent.

Obviously we see him as an investment for the future but we are hoping he makes an early breakthrough, pushing the more established wide men of Ally Reid, Ringo McWilliam and Campbell Watt for a first team place.

6. Ryan Dick

Ryan made his debut or the club in last season’s 6 – 1 thrashing of Huntly in The Aberdeenshire Shield semi final. Three days later his performance was such that he retained his place in the second round of The Scottish Junior Cup against arch enemy Sunnybank.

Although we were disappointed at losing the tie, Ryan equipped himself admirably and exposure to this level of soccer at such an early age will benefit his career with the club.

An intelligent young man Ryan is a second year accountancy student at Aberdeen University and we are confident he will be a stalwart for Banks O Dee in the coming seasons.

7. Adam McNamee

Ask Coach Ian Taylor about Adam McNamee and he will tell you he has the sharpest football brain at the club. His vision is exceptional and he is indeed a gifted footballer.

However this will be a huge season for young Adam as he must “step up to the plate” and realise his potential by imposing himself on a game. He should be controlling games rather than playing on the fringes.

If he uses his ability in the correct manner on the field of play, he will, without doubt, go on to play at a higher level.

League Game Vs Maud

When Banks O Dee rested the league title from Culter in the final league game of last season Ian Taylor told me the first junior manager to send a text message in congratulations was Chris Hunter of Maud.

Little wonder therefore our management and coaching staff hold both Chris (and of course father Rex) and his club in the highest regard.

Arguably the most progressive club in North East Junior circles, the improvements made by Maud both on and and off the park in the last 24 months has been nothing short of astounding.

Their new dressing rooms and training facilities are the match of any junior club in the area ( with the possible exception of Spain Park ) and the quality of seasoned pro and talented youngsters brought to the club by Chris Hunter proves Maud are in the North Region Super League for many seasons to come.

A superb 2 - 1 Scottish Junior Cup replay victory over Dundee North End last Saturday was a notable achievement and only highlights the quality of opposition we are confronted with today.

In the last 15 months we have played Maud in both league and cup competitions on various occasions and each time, little has separated the teams after 90 minutes.

No doubt today’s encounter will be exactly the same and we can therefore look forward to another intriguing Super League fixture.

BANKS O DEE WIN THE SUPER LEAGUE TITLE!!

Banks O Dee Win the Super League Title after Dyce FC won 3 - 1 against Sunnybank FC, tonight, June 1st 2009. The Super League Trophy will remain at Spain Park for another year.

After waiting 21 years to win a league title, Garry Welsh and his team should be particulary proud of their achievment.

There's no doubt that season 2008/09 will go down in the history of Banks O Dee as another eventful season. Welldone to the Coaching Team and of course not forgetting the out-standing Players - What a great end to the Season!

We should have a full match report written by Ian Taylor in the next few days.

Banks O Dee Close to Retaining Super League Title

Banks O Dee’s league programme was completed with a comfortable 4 – 0 win over East End at Spain Park.

If Sunnybank fail to beat Dyce by 10 goals in their final league encounter next Monday (1st June) then the Super League Trophy will remain at Spain Park.

After waiting 21 years to win a league title it would be a marvellous achievement by Garry Welsh and his team should they retain it.

Let’s not forget there is also a McLeman Cup final on Friday 5th May to consider but whatever the outcome, season 2008/09 will go down in the history of Banks O Dee as another eventful season..........let’s hope it’s a successful one as well!!

Garry McNamee wins Player Of The Year Award

First season recruit Garry McNamee will remember the 23rd May 2009 for some time.Garry McNamee

Not only did Banks O Dee increase their lead at the top of The Super League Table, but Garry was voted The Player of The Year. When you consider Garry was playing amateur football this time last season this award is a tremendous achievement.

Banks O Dee have a talented squad of players and therefore, all the more credit to Garry for firstly forcing himself into the side and then having the ability and desire to become a fixture in central defence.

Garry should be rightfully proud his fellow team mates, manager, coaches and committee voted him the player of 2008/09 but he well knows there is room for improvement in various aspects of his play.

However with his attitude and desire this should be the first of many awards for this likeable young man.

Just to round off a great evening for the McNamee family young brother Adam picked up The Under 19 Player of The Year Award. The proud parents attended the presentation at the RUA Club unaware their sons had both picked their respective Player of The Year Awards.

Campbell Watt wins Annual Golf Outing at Braemar

Campbell Watt who plays off a handicap of 3Campbell Watt won the Banks O Dee players golf outing which was held at Braemar on Sunday 10th May.

The outing was attended by players of the senior, under 21 and under 19 sides, team managers and coaches ,plus parents and committee members Chris Phillips and Brian Cormack. Richard Easton of The Evening Express also attended and picked up a prize as a team winner.

Everyone had a superb time and it was a great exercise on team/club bonding. The feedback is we will do the same again next year.

Let’s hope the more established members of the committee show more interest in this event in the coming years as they would be made most welcome. After all it was a club outing.

For the record, Campbell recorded a gross 70 to win with a bit to spare! Full marks to “tour organiser” Grant Pennet who did a grand job of arranging the entire outing.

He will be pleased to know he has been re-elected and will be responsible for arranging next year’s event!

Coach Golightly Takes The Plunge!

After many years of deftly avoiding many dangerous tackles coach Alan Goghlightly has finally had to admit defeat and on Friday April 10th will marry his fiancée Kelly at The Pittodrie House Hotel, Chapel of Garioch.

We wish Kelly and Alan every success and happiness for the future and while all the players are looking forward to attending the evening’s festivities it will be tempered by the fact Welsh and Taylor will be “overseeing the situation”!

Alan had a fine playing career and has thrived in his capacity as club coach and Under 21 manager. Ian Taylor has worked with many coaches in his varied career and rates Alan as one of the best young coaches he has seen.

On the day, we hope the sun shines for Kelly and yourself Alan, but remember not too much champagne.........because you have a vital match the next day!!
